“I feel the power of eternity when I stare at this mountain in the desert,” says freelance photojournalist Maria Stenzel. “All the elements have come together: beautiful low light that warms the foreground and shows the texture of the desert landscape; a huge horizon; and a brooding lenticular cloud signaling high winds on the mountain summit.” For Darren Smith, National Geographic design editor, “the cloud performs a delicate balancing act atop the mountain, making the two massive forces of geology and meteorology appear light. Clouds are often just garland in mountain photos, but here the cloud is an equal subject, casting shadows that help define the peak.”
